Having joined Rousselot in 2020 as ‘Science Communication Manager’, our colleague Catarina Ferreira da Silva has recently changed jobs – or rather, job titles: her new role is that of ‘Science Integration Manager’. The title expresses a key element in Rousselot’s outlook on the future of science, she explains.
Combining scientific data with Chinese medicine
Catarina is even more excited about her new job title than she was about the previous one. ‘I love both jobs, because they combine breadth and depth of the collagen molecule. That has increased with the new job. Just to give you one out-of-the-box example, in addition to my academic background in biology, I am a student of Classic Chinese medicine. The connections between ancient knowledge and today’s science are really exciting, and understanding more about both will invariably produce new insights and opportunities. In Asia, for instance, because the whole human body is viewed as one, the connection between emotional wellbeing and gut health is already known and well accepted. And it is very exciting to see that Western scientists are now demonstrating how that connection is established. This is what I love about my job, integrating different ways of understanding the human body.
Putting together a puzzle
‘This shows you that a part of my job as Science Integration Manager is to feed our scientific research with insights from other sources. And, conversely, to share data based on our science that will support and spread knowledge that has been around for a long time – or in some cases perhaps will debunk old myths. More and more, in today’s world, recognizing and creating new opportunities is about putting together the pieces of very complex puzzles that have never been put together before. This is what I love about my job. Leveraging my passion for health, I get to talk with both academics and businesspeople across different disciplines and markets, and to help them convert data and ideas into real solutions that can help improve people’s health.’
